Mike Goldby

mikegclose

It is with great sadness that I have to inform the membership that Mike Goldby died early yesterday morning. He was at home with his wife Kim and family.

As well as being a racer, previously in the Fireball fleet and later in the Scorpion fleet, Mike was involved at the club as an executive committee member, an instructor the training section, with the Chernobyl Children’s visits and with Sailability. He showed great patience as an instructor, although racing was a different matter!

Mike and Kim were at the Scorpion Fleet supper last weekend and fleet captain Nicki Theokritoff was proud to be able, on behalf of the fleet and club, to present him with a token that recognised his activity in the club, and showed how important he was to the fleet.

Mike will be missed by all those who knew him, and on behalf of the club I extend our heartfelt sympathy to Kim and their family.

John Parr
Commodore
Notts County Sailing Club (5/12/09)

I would like to convey my thanks for all the kind words and support I have received over the past very difficult year and a special thank you to all club members who were able to be at Mike’s funeral, he would have been chuffed to bits to think so many friends turned up.

Kim Goldby

To Whom it may concern.

Firstly please allow me to introduce myself as Mike Goldbys daughter, Katherine. I tonight googled my dads name, one of the daft things you do when trying to get closer to a loved one and came across your tribute to him.

I would like to thank you personally for the support and compassion you have shown my dad in the past year and to say he held you all in very high regard and thoroughly enjoyed being an active member of your club.

Kind Regards
Katherine

Good on you Dad.... These photos freak me out..... Like looking in the mirror so i'll never forget those laughter lines.

Your the brightest star in the sky!!!! (As Rhain often reminds me)

Mike taught Kim (the Commodore's partner) to sail along with numerous youngsters with whom he seemed to conect with so well. He moved from Rutland to Notts County because it was so sociable.

I will remember Mike for always looking on the bright side of lfe, ready to smile and wanting to know how you where with litlle regard for his own condition. He was often down helping with training, sailability or just enjoying the water, the spring regatta and the BBQ was his forte. Our thoughts go to Kim and family. I shall miss him - David Eberlin

Two years ago I approached Mike and asked if he would be interested in a weeks skiing with a friend of mine. He was not sure whether he should go off without Kim as they had always skied together in the past. However Kim overheard the conversation and encouraged him to join us.

I am so pleased she did. I had not laughed so much in years. It was like being back at school. It was so easy to make Mike laugh which was infectious and the three of us were laughing from morning till late at night in the bar.

Although not very fit for skiing Mike just would not give up or be left behind.

During this particular week we decided to ski all the resorts in the 'Three Valleys' in one day which was a bit of a challenge in terms of distance and also included many reds and blacks. At about 4pm with light fading we still had some miles to go to get the last lift back. Poor Mike could hardly walk at the end of it but he just loved the fact that we had achieved it and he had pushed himself to the limit, which I think said a lot about his approach to life and his approach to sailing with Kim - they would very rarely be put off by wind and waves or a few capsizes.

I will never forget that week and the great time I had with a real friend.

Cheers

John Rowell

I probably first met Mike around the time I started racing at the club, but I particularly remember reading his entertaining account of a Brancaster weekend spent sailing, birdwatching and socialising (including 'spoons'!). I've just re-read it in a back copy of Wayfarer News and can't help noticing the typical boyish enthusiasm and the broad grin in the accompanying photo.

A couple of other occasions come to mind. One was a windy Thursday evening at the club when we were launching just ahead of Mike off a lee shore (sea breeze?) and had forgotten to unfurl the jib. Although clearly anxious about the imminent race start, Mike remained calm and polite while we sorted out the sail and sheets, and when we chatted about it afterwards (with me feeling rather embarassed) he produced that friendly smile and some encouraging words.

On another occasion we happened to be sitting at adjacent tables on the balcony talking about a now forgotten incident on the water - I think it was during a Scorpion Open - and with the now familiar enthusiasm he described how this has revealed to him a new theory of when to tack and why a particular wind-shift was advantageous - still learning, and sharing.

Mike didn't just turn up and go through the motions; he always seemed pleased to see old and new friends, and attacked life with gusto whilst maintaining a considerate approach to others. I'm just sorry that I didn't get to know him better.

Dave Barker.

If anyone would like to add any comments/ tributes please e mail to club site and I will put them up.
