Topper Midland Series at NCSC

IMG2219
IMG2147

James Logan organised a Topper Midland series event at the club to run with Saturday racing. Twenty youngsters arrived to find an interesting breeze, as John Sears tried to cope with 90 ' shifts as Race Officer. Christopher Berry took two races to win, whilst our first competitor was in the under 13 Lawrence Logan, Peter Anderson finishing a place behind. The club fielded an excellant nine Toppers, which was an excellant turnout, and whilst they were not all at the front they all did well.

On Saturday the 30th May, the sun shone brightly, the force 2 to 3 wind blew onshore at Notts County SC as twenty Toppers from eight clubs around the ITCA Midlands Region gathered for this event.

The Race Officer, John Sears, set a long first beat into a varying wind across the lake, and a port circuit with a nice reach across to the lee mark.  The racing was close at the front of the fleet as the Venables brothers, Chris Berry, Georgina Clabburn and Ian Payne fought for the top positions.  In race 2 Lawrence Logan managed to turn a leading position into a mid fleet one by death rolling and turtling, much to the other competitors entertainment. At lunch, after two back to back races, there was no real differentiator and it was all down to the final race.

With the fleet mixing it on the race course with the club's usual Saturday afternoon racing, Chris Berry managed to pull out a good lead by the end to clain two first places and be the overall winner.

Dan Venables, leading U13 sailor, came second, just beating his older brother Matt into 3rd place.  An excellent days sailing for the well supported, Purple Marine sponsored, Midlands series.  Special thanks also to Morton Boats who generously provided some excellent prizes.  The travelling group next meet on Sat 6th June at Hollowell SC, and hope for more close, fun racing.
