Notts County’s annual spring regatta was yet again a huge success. Over 180 took part in the social, with over 50 different craft in the racing, including a contingent from Bala, which is some going on a Bank Holiday weekend!

It all started on Friday night, or afternoon for many as Pauline relaxed by a borrowed caravan and declared it was her day off. Quite a few arrived early to bag their spot, and the windsurfers opened the bar early dispensing Black Sheep and a number of other beverages. A bring your own BBQ was followed by open mike.

Saturday was wet and miserable, as the 20 or so young Saturday clubbers took to the water in Opies and Toppers, whilst parents helped put boats on the water and cover safety. King of the pirates Russ Clay was the end of the treasure Hunt (when he managed to change!). Ken Twemlow set up the course and about 50 boats sailed round for the morning class race. The Regatta fleet for novices and those out of class rules saw 19 entries, which was an excellent entry. The afternoon Commodore’s Cup handicap racing saw a slight let up in the rain in a slightly better breeze.

The evening BBQ ably cooked by a number in the kitchen, organised by Vice Commodore Rachel McEvoy who was in charge of the weekend. A rock band followed as the Black Sheep ran out and dancing continued to 11pm.

The following morning saw Simon McEvoy up early cleaning up before his early morning sail, and a number of sore heads as the sun came out and the wind started increasing. By start of race time it was 25 mph and a large number had to be rescued and towed in meaning all four safety crew were busy, thanks to those who decided discretion was the better part of valour and stepped in to help.

The high winds continued over lunch as the windsurfers enjoyed their first real shortboarding this season and the speed record went over 30 knots for this year.

After lunch the wind was still gusting through at 25 mph, but the underlying speed was a little less, Stuart Poole’s very tricky dead run made for some very nervous sailors and more than a few capsizes, it was a bit cruel putting it just by the committee boat!

The evening saw a Pauline hot meal with a magician Roy Bond who wowed adults and children alike with his excellent magic show. Rings disappeared; rope changed length and dice that couldn’t keep the same. This was followed by George Stanton’s disco.

Sunday was overcast with occasional sun and a light wind which decreased during the day and swung, the racing started after a short postponement.
