There was a great turnout for the 2016 junior open. Despite the slow morning, fickle wind and the heavens opening periodically throughout the open everyone had a fabulous day filled with competitive racing. NCSC welcomed Richard Baker from Wanlip who did excellently for his debut open and achieved the top Under 19 prize.
The mornings races brought very slow and shifty winds however, this didn’t take away from the competitiveness and competence of the young sailors. Thanks to Ross Ryan our Commodore who did a grand job as race officer in tricky conditions. Our very own Will Thomas managed a 1st and a 2nd in these two races who also took the Under 13 and overall win for the open to retain his title from last year.
A valiant effort from Molly Hinsliff-Smith saw her at 3rd place by lunch and managing 2nd Under 13 by the end of the day!
After a delicious lunch as always from Pauline and the Galley, everyone was rearing to go once more for the afternoon racing! The wind started to pick up and a slight change of course and they were off.
The competition was down to the wire and meant it was all down to the last race! Although Amy Hinsliff-Smith stormed to victory, Will managed to retain his spot on the leader board.
A special well done to Raife Piggott who was the youngest member of our fleet today at only 9 years old and completing all the races and finishing brilliantly in 11th .
Thanks to our sponsor Embroidery Design Solutions who provided some fantastic embroidered prizes for all our juniors.
Thank you to everyone who made this day possible including Ross Ryan + race team, Kathryn Hinsliff-Smith for never ending enthusiasm , Andy and Isabel Buchan for behind the scenes and all the safety crew!
From Ed: Thanks also to Matt Buchan who has been Junior rep for the last four years, and this is his last event, Amy Hinsliff Smith has taken over.
Some photos from the second race.
