Around 34 entrants over half being Team 15 entered the Windsurf open at the club. Teams from all over the midlands came to compete along with race boards from all over the Midlands. We chose the hottest day of the year to run the meeting – nice in a way but really to hot for racing. The safety boats event had sun umbrellas up!
The morning started windless, so Max Bushall and Sue Sprekley got the youngsters out on the water. making good use of the club kit, with a team paddling race, then ball collection. plenty of smiles as Guy turned the hose on the competitors to cool them off.
Then at around 1 pm the wind started filling in, the racing was on, and Raceboard and Technos disappeared onto the larger course whilst the juniors sailed in front of the clubhouse. it was brutally hot, the club station recorded over 30’C most of the afternoon, it was certainly in the high 20s’C.
John & Kim Parr and the race team managed to squeeze four races in and it was close on all the fleets (results to follow). Max Bushell certainly gave Guy Sprekley a run for his money in spite of an older Raceboard and smaller sail. Guy maintained his constancy to win by a point in the final race. Meanwhile Tony Goodwin won the 7.5 with the ladies Vicki Packman and Andrea Longley in a credible 3rd and 4th overall.
The Technos also had some great racing with Mollie Sprekley y winning all but the first race and Andrew Smithson from Glossop the 5.8 Techno on equal points with Alice Bennion from Burton.
Meanwhile a separate course in front of the clubhouse saw the younger less experienced Team 15ers take part in the 4.5 and 3.5 fleets. Luke Hayes from Thrapston Sea Cadets won the 3.5 with a string of firsts. and Max Busdsworth won the 4.5 fleet. There were quite a few who tried racing for the first time such as Sam Freeman and James Herlihy – we’ll done to them – they won the merit awards.
Thanks to Boardwise for some excellent prizes for Raceboards and RYA for Team 15 prizes.
