Fun race in Memory of Will Stanton

The summer winer group organised a fun memorial ‘race’ (more a trip round the boys perhaps) in memory of our fun loving ex Principle and friend of the club Will Stanton, who recently passed away.

It was great to see the Stanton family down George / Natalie and the rest of the family with Gill enjoying the sunshine and the wind.

Peter King set a reaching start and blew a horn at intervals, confusing the two cobbles and toppers, along with a HANSA dinghy as too when the start time was. Anyway everyone set off, and George Stanton immediately went into the lead, and was never challenged. Steve Payne decided that the occasion merited a dinner jacket (with buoyancy aid and wetsuit under – he’s much slimmer than the photo shows!) whilst sailing and capsized his topper when a cobble didn’t hear his cries of starboard, and then at the gybe mark in particularly severe gust. Steve and Gill, of boat park fame, took out the HANSA boat and had a great time. The cobbles also had some excitement with a broach or two but smiles all round.

After a couple of races George was declared the winner (well he had to be didn’t he) and everyone settled down for a picnic lunch. About thirty came to enjoy each others company including many of his old friends. Some money was collected in aid of RNLI, his chosen charity, anyone who would like to donate can do so directly to RNLI and let the family know if you wish, or through the club.
